Registration Now Open For 2018 Longhorn Jazz Festival-Saturday, April 14-Conrad Herwig with UT Jazz Orchestra

Registration is now open for the 2018 Longhorn Jazz Festival, to be held on Saturday, April 14. During the day on Saturday, April 914 high school jazz ensembles will have the opportunity to perform as part of the festival. The tradition of top-flight soloists appearing with the UT Jazz Orchestra continues with trombonist Conrad Herwig as guest soloist with the UT Jazz Orchestra. In addition to releasing 20 albums as a leader, Herwig has performed with Miles Davis, Joe Henderson and Frank Sinatra. There will be a clinic for all festival participants given by Mr. Herwig on Saturday, April 14 at noon.

Jazz Orchestra and AIME to Europe!

The UT Jazz Orchestra and AIME had a successful ten-day tour of Europe this summer, performing at the Montreux Jazz Festival on July 2 and 3, at Luxembourg Gardens in Paris on July 6, and at the North Sea Jazz Festival in Rotterdam on July 8. In addition to big band standards, the programs featured compositions and arrangements by UT students Sarah Milligan, Bryan Kennard, Chase Goldman, and Ari Burns, and by UT professor John Mills. Members of the groups also heard (and sometimes met) many of the greats in jazz, especially at the North Sea festival. AIME Wins Downbeat Award

Longhorn Jazz Festival Featuring Cyrus Chestnut

The tradition of top-flight soloists appearing with the UT Jazz Orchestra continues with pianist Cyrus Chestnut as guest soloist with the UT Jazz Orchestra. In addition to leading his own trio, Mr. Chestnut has performed with Dizzy Gillespie, Branford Marsalis, and Terence Blanchard. There will be a clinic for all festival participants given by Mr. Chestnut on Saturday, April 8 at noon.

On Saturday evening, the Jazz Orchestra will perform a concert featuring several original compositions and arrangements by UT students and faculty. UT Jazz Orchestra Plays TMEA

The UT Jazz Orchestra will perform a set of music at the 2017 TMEA Convention in San Antonio on Thursday, February 9, 10am-11am in the CC Stars at Night Ballroom 1-2. The concert will feature a selection of standard repertoire and original compositions by students Bryan Kennard and Thomas Wenglinsky, and Dr. John Mills.

Jazz Orchestra Invited to North Sea Jazz Festival

dsc_1450After the UT Jazz Orchestra successfully raised its HornRaiser goal, we have officially received invitations to perform at the Montreux and North Sea Jazz Festivals. Contributions to the HornRaiser project will fund North Sea Festival tickets for Jazz Orchestra members, allowing them the opportunity to hear two full days of jazz from the best artists in the field; and will fund hotel expenses for the group while in Rotterdam.

This is very exciting news, and we look forward to sharing the journey with you. Stay tuned for more updates!

Jack DeJohnette Live Interview

Dr. John Mills will conduct a live interview with jazz drumming great Jack DeJohnette on February 2, 3pm-4pm in the Jazz Room. This will be ahead of DeJohnette’s sold out performance with saxophonist Ravi Coltrane and bassist Matthew Garrison on February 3 at the McCullough Theater.

Helen Sung receives Distinguished Alumna Award

Jazz pianist and BSoM alum Helen Sung will be awarded the E. William Doty Distinguished Alumna Award. She will also teach a clinic on January 27, noon to 1pm in the UT Jazz Room (MRH 6.248). Ms. Sung was an aspiring classical pianist before discovering jazz during her undergraduate studies in the Butler School of Music. Sung went on to graduate from the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz Performance (at the New England Conservatory) and win the Kennedy Center’s Mary Lou Williams Jazz Piano Competition. Now based in New York City, Sung is an active bandleader/composer.
